aerial of the Newly Reopened Palmer Golf Course

After many months of growing anticipation, Tesoro Club just north of The Palm Beaches has reopened the first of two championship courses, the Palmer Course, on November 30th to rave reviews. This haven for avid golfers that once hosted the 2007 PGA Tour Ginn Sur Mer Classic is already reinstating its position as a destination for PGA-level play by hosting two tour qualifying events. The Astara Golf Championship Qualifier for the 2023 PGA Korn Ferry Tour was held on January 25th, and the Honda Classic Qualifier is scheduled for later this month.

With championship golfers and social beginners hitting the links once again, golfers agree that every hole within this par-72 course is a walk through a picturesque natural setting. Tesoro Club’s Head Golf Professional Matthew Doyle, a PGA Class “A” member and award-winning pro since 1997, and Assistant PGA Golf Professional Spencer Rinaldi agree that the par threes are truly something special. “The par threes are the real ‘show ponies’ of our course,” shared Matthew Doyle. “Each is spectacular and unique, with different settings that will have golfers staring in amazement at its beauty.” Let’s hear their perspectives on what makes each of these par threes special.

Tesoro Hole 4 - Par 3 sheet

Hole Four

As golfers pull up to the tee box on hole number four, they will find a beautiful waterfall feature that runs the entire length of the tee boxes, creating a serene setting for a great shot. A series of stacked bunkers not only create a unique layered effect, but tests golfers’ skills as they aim to avoid them. This par-three hole plays from 92 yards at the most forward tee to 222 yards at the championship tee.

“It’s a very aesthetically pleasing hole, especially with the stacked bunkering Tesoro Club used,” shared Rinaldi. “You don’t see that kind of bunkering often in Florida golf courses.”

Tesoro Hole 6 - Par 3 sheet

Hole Six

Even though hole number six is a longer par three, playing between 142 and 231 yards, extended waterfront views make it enjoyable for all players. The marshland guards the front of the green, while swaying palms and flowering landscapes masterfully frame the hole’s layout.

“On hole number six, the view of the waterway extends all the way down to the bridge on number two,” said Doyle. “It’s such a beautiful natural area that you almost don’t even look at the hole.”

Tesoro Hole 12 - Par 3 sheet

Hole Twelve

The twelfth hole is distinguished from the other par threes with its pine forest setting. Playing from 89 to 214 yards, the course is tree-lined off the tee, with luscious landscaping providing a scenic yet challenging round. As golfers approach the greens, a rock wall with waterfalls extending a hundred yards deep provides a scenic backdrop to chase birdies.

“The 12th hole is hands down the most attractive on the Palmer Course,” shared Rinaldi. “The landscaping, the flowers, and the waterfalls all frame the hole well from the tee box to the greens.”

Tesoro Hole 17 - Par 3 sheet

Hole Seventeen

Whether standing on the tee box or the green, hole number 17 is known for its infinite views of the water. Not only does the iconic landmark Clubhouse begin to come into view, but the hole is framed along Tesoro Club’s large freshwater lake, providing views of the water that extend as far as the eye can see. The 17th hole is also the largest of the par threes, playing from 100 to 225 yards.

“The 17th hole is personally my favorite on the course,” shared Doyle. “It’s just a unique piece of property with spectacular views of the green surrounded by white sand, the coquina, and crushed concrete.”

Nature is instrumental to the course’s design, and it’s common to spot native birds such as roseate spoonbills, and ibis, as well as turtles throughout the course. Tesoro Club’s golf experience, however, does not stop at the Palmer course. Tesoro Club’s second championship course, the Watson Course, renovations are planned for the future.

“Both the Palmer and Watson course are unique in their own ways, providing two different styles of Florida golf,” shared Head Golf Professional Matthew Doyle. “The Palmer course is spectacular, with waterways, wide open spaces, bunkering, and shots that take your breath away. On the other hand, the Watson course will wind through pine forests and natural wetlands and grasslands to provide a completely different golf experience that you don’t often see in Florida.”

The 7,333-yard, par-72 course has a high shot value, with challenging holes that require both club strength and accuracy. “The Palmer course takes your breath away,” shared Head Golf Professional Matthew Doyle. “The beauty, the waterways, the shots, the bunkering – it really is a spectacular golf course that really has a big wow factor to it. A Full Golf Course Rehabilitation

When it came time to rehabilitate the Palmer course back to its legendary status, not a single detail was overlooked. Doyle and the ownership team sought the expert help of South Florida Golf Renovations LLC to bring the course back to its PGA standards. Led by Jon Beckmann, the company has over 40 years of experience renovating some of the area’s finest courses, including Palm Beach Country Club, High Ridge in Lantana, Admiral’s Cove in Jupiter, and Jonathan’s Landing Old Trail in Jupiter.

The project started with extensive improvements to the irrigation system to create optimal growing and playing conditions. A plan was then developed to give the greens their distinctive color, including heavy verticutting, top dressing, and over seeding with Poa Trivialis. The bunkers have also undergone restorations to bring them back to PGA standards, while rehabilitation projects on the bridges ensure golfers can ride throughout the course with ease.

From the very beginning, the ownership team has been extremely involved in ensuring the course stands out as a premier offering in South Florida. “The owners have been great to work with,” said Doyle. “They’ve been working diligently, investing in the property, and bringing back all the necessary tools that we need to do our jobs – all with the goal of becoming the premier golf facility in the area. I really enjoy working for them and me and my staff are going to give it our all to provide the service that they want and deserve.”

Renovations to the Watson Course Planned for the Future

Tesoro Club’s golf experience, however, doesn’t stop at the Palmer course. The visionary ownership team is currently working with Tom Watson Design to renovate Tesoro Club’s second championship golf course. Running along the east side of Tesoro Club, the Watson course is just one of three designed by Tom Watson throughout the state. The 7,019-yard par-72 course is much more tree-lined, creating a memorable round through pine forests, natural wetlands, and grasslands. The Watson course renovations are planned for the future.

“Both of the golf courses at Tesoro Club are very unique and different in their own ways, and they have different beauties,” said Doyle. “One (the Palmer course) with amazing waterways and one (the Watson course) through a grassland preserve and pine forest gives you two different styles of Florida. But to bring that lifestyle back to Tesoro Club, I’m just really looking forward to seeing the look on everybody’s faces when they’re blown away.”
