Tucker Frederickson, Timothy Jones and Roderick O’Connor at Tesoro Club

Exciting times lie ahead for one of South Florida’s most iconic golf club communities. With new luxury homes under construction and senior staff preparing facilities, menus and lifestyle programming, anticipation continues to build for Tesoro Club’s Golf & Social Club Membership offerings. Behind it all, a visionary new ownership team is bringing this private, master-planned community to a new level of distinction. Each of the owners bring to Tesoro Club in-depth real estate and private club experience. Here’s a more in-depth introduction each of the owners who will be guiding the Club’s future.

Timothy Jones

Timothy Jones at Tesoro Club
As a leading New York investor and CEO of Robert Martin Company, LLC., Timothy Jones has a track record of successfully acquiring, developing, and managing land and commercial properties throughout New York and Florida. With a current portfolio of more than six million square feet of properties and 200 acres of developable land, RMC is Westchester County’s leading real estate development firm with a retail value above $2 billion. Jones was also recently named one of 914 Magazine’s 2022 CEOs of the Year for his achievements in the real estate industry. In 2019, while seeking additional investment opportunities within Florida’s emerging Treasure Coast area, Jones spearheaded the acquisition of Tesoro Club and is currently working with his team of experienced real estate and lifestyle developers to refurbish all the facilities.

Roderick O’Connor

Roderick O'Connor at Tesoro Club
Best friend and close associate of Jones, Roderick O’Connor is also a New York developer with a long pedigree of real estate projects across the country. After beginning his career on Wall Street, O’Connor founded ROC Group, Inc. in 1991, focusing on purchasing various types of real estate assets throughout the United States. In late 1992, he merged ROC with Brickman Associates, where he and Bruce Brickman were responsible for building a diverse portfolio of office buildings, residential, and hospitality properties across the nation, with over $3 billion of total capital. After 20 years, O’Connor resigned from Brickman to pursue building ROC Group, Inc. into a family-owned and operated real estate company. O’Connor intends to leverage his reputation for working on complex transactions and his hands-on investment approach to ensure the creation of superior residential communities for his families.

Tucker Frederickson

Eleven pickleball courts and two bocce lawns are also currently under construction. With the recent re-opening of Tesoro Club’s Swim & Racquet Club, many eyes have turned to the ownership team’s plans for their two championship golf courses. With the fall 2022 reopening of the Palmer Course on schedule, the team has announced Matthew Doyle as the Club’s new Head Golf Professional. A PGA Class “A” Member and award-winning professional since 1997, Doyle has helped spearhead the Palmer course’s extensive renovations while also planning an elaborate golf program for future Members. Here’s your chance to meet Doyle and see what he has in store for this private golf club community.

Meet Matthew Doyle

matthew doyle headshot
Since he was three years old, Doyle has always had a passion for golf. After playing soccer, tennis, basketball, and golf throughout his childhood, he realized at 14 that golf was where he truly shined. Therefore, he went on to play collegiately at the University of Minnesota, where he was named a Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Doyle then turned professional and moved to Florida, where he played at the PGA Qualifying School, became the 2016 New England Champion, the 2020 South Florida PGA Championship runner-up, and received numerous other accolades. After a decade of tournament play, Doyle shifted to the country club world. From caddie and membership salesman to eventually Director of Golf, he showed his dedication to the sport and its Members at The Dye Preserve in Jupiter, Turtle Creek Golf Club in Tequesta, and the Misquamicut Club in Rhode Island.

Doyle is looking forward to bringing his decades of golf experience to the Tesoro Club team. “I’m here because I see the potential in the property and the opportunity to work with a great ownership group who I truly believe are building a great Club. I love the project, so I moved up here to be a part of the Tesoro family.”

Renovations Nearing Completion on the Palmer Golf Course

With plans to reopen its Palmer Course in fall 2022, Doyle and the ownership team have been working on an extensive rehabilitation project for the course. The team has been working hard to bring the course back to the original architect and legendary golfer Arnold Palmer’s standards, focused on stunning natural landscapes and challenging layouts that excite players of all skill levels. From extensive greens work to the rehabilitation of the waterways, the first part of the team’s rehabilitation efforts ensures the courses’ natural beauty reigns supreme. Nature is an instrumental part of this course, and it’s not rare for golfers to spot wildlife such as roseate spoonbills, ibis, turtles, and even fish.

“These projects have been instrumental for the views of the golf course, but more importantly, for the homeowners at the Club,” said Doyle. “Their views are now water and golf views, and they’re spectacular.”

Tesoro Club’s renovation efforts, however, are not just focused on beauty. Rehabilitation projects on the bridges connecting the holes and extensive improvements to the irrigation system created optimal growing and playing conditions on the fairways. A bunker restoration program will bring the course up to PGA standards.

“The golf course is a championship-level, exciting course to play that will surely test you,” said Doyle. “It will bring your adrenaline level up because of the challenges Mr. Palmer put out there for the golfer.”

An Exceptional Golf Program for Players of Every Skill Level

As Tesoro Club plans for the Palmer Course’s reopening, Matthew Doyle will lead the full golf program that will continue to grow over time. Future Members can expect an elevated golf experience, including instruction from a team of golf professionals, equipment fittings at the Golf Pro Shop, and a full calendar of golf activities and events that get the community active, engaged, and simply enjoying the game.

“The experience I want people to have is that they feel as if they are coming into their home,” said Doyle. “Their home is not overbearing, but has a high level of service that’s comfortable. We want to create a really well-knit, comfortable, highly serviced facility.”

As anticipation continues to build for Tesoro Club’s grand reopening, the visionary new ownership has shared exciting plans for the Swim & Racquet Club. Encouraging the finest of sporting lifestyles, this Florida golf & country club community will be among the first in the area to incorporate three racquet sports into their program. From tennis and pickleball to the internationally renowned padel, see what’s being planned for this exceptional address.

Tennis Led by a USPTA Professional

tennis coach Terri Gaskill headshot
From beginners to avid tennis players, Tesoro Club’s nine Har-Tru tennis courts offer options for every age and skill level. Several of the courts are lit for night play, with courtside stadium seating perfect for tournaments and events. Tesoro Club’s tennis program is led by Terri Gaskill, a certified USPTA Elite tennis professional with over 30 years of playing and teaching experience. Named one of James Madison University’s Top 50 All-Time Greatest Athletes, Gaskill was ranked nationally all four years of college, playing in the NCAA Championships. She looks forward to bringing her skills to Tesoro Club, hosting a lively calendar of Member tournaments, clinics, lessons, and more each year.

America’s Fastest-Growing Sport – Pickleball

four people playing pickleball

Combining the elements of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton, Tesoro Club will offer eleven dedicated pickleball courts, including several lighted for night play. Pickleball has exploded in popularity within the past few years thanks to its ease to play, but ability to develop into a quick, fast-paced game for experienced players. The game is played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net, paddle, and a plastic ball with holes. Played in singles or doubles format, this growing sport is great for both longtime tennis aficionados and new players alike.

International Sport Padel Makes its Debut

perforated paddle for padel

Tesoro Club’s ownership team is also searching for ways to bring something new to their racquet offerings and are looking into adding in a padel court. This rising international sport from Europe combines the elements of tennis, squash, and badminton on a court that’s a quarter the size of a tennis court. In padel, however, players use a perforated paddle, and the court is surrounded by glass, ensuring the ball can never go out of bounds. With an AstroTurf surface, the ball in padel moves slower than in tennis. However, for more experienced players, the ball can be bounced off the walls, creating a strategic and fast-paced game enjoyed by all. While popular throughout South America and Europe, this sport is lesser known in America, with only 65 courts across the nation, and only 5 other courts in Florida.

A Premier Treasure Coast Address

Along with the racquet sports program, The Swim & Racquet Club will also feature a junior Olympic, 30 meter, zero-edge swimming pool, two bocce lawns, casual poolside dining, and a pro shop for swim and racquet needs. The 100,000 square foot Landmark Clubhouse will offer Members salon and spa services, a state-of-the-art fitness center, men’s and women’s locker rooms, a golf pro shop, and boundless activities for Members to enjoy. Tesoro Club is also home to two 18-hole championship golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson. Both courses are undergoing renovations to improve playability for players of all skill levels, with the Palmer course planned to open later this year and the Watson course in 2024.

The development team is also excited to announce an exciting array of new homes that will be introduced to the market during the summer of 2022. Two of the nation’s top homebuilders, WCI Communities and Toll Brothers, will provide an outstanding selection of residential options, while custom home builders will offer a collection of more personalized homes. Spectacular wooded preserves, Arnold Palmer golf course, or lake views will be the standard for every residence, creating an enviable address focused on indoor/ outdoor Florida living.

Marco Schlenz in front of tesoro
As Marco Schlenz enters Tesoro Club, he is surrounded by bustling activity. Who will be the chef to lead our culinary operations? When will we be ready to open the Club’s golf courses? When will the Fitness Classes begin in the Fitness Center? Is construction of the pickleball courts on schedule?

As the Club’s new General Manager, Marco Schlenz has taken the helm. He’s making these decisions and hundreds more to cultivate the lifestyle of one of the area’s premier private clubs. A lifetime professional leading the way in both the culinary and hospitality industries, here’s a closer look at how Schlenz is leading the team to create an exciting future for this exceptional Florida golf club.

Tapping Into a Lifetime of Experience

From dishwasher and prep cook to corporate chef and country club general manager, Marco Schlenz brings hands-on experience and lessons learned to Tesoro Club. It’s no wonder the new ownership team led by Tim Jones recognized he was uniquely qualified to bring Tesoro Club to life. As a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Schlenz was the Director of Operations for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics bid in 1991 and holds dual Swiss-USA citizenship. He has operated a wide variety of dining venues from high-volume, multi-concept venues to small-scale operations.

Schlenz’s achievements, however, do not stop in the culinary world. After moving to Florida, he became the General Manager of The Dye Preserve in Jupiter and oversaw the design and construction of the Clubhouse. He has also overseen Club operations at President Country Club in West Palm Beach and St. Andrews in Boca Raton. Schlenz looks forward to bringing his expertise to help Tesoro Club go from concept to opening day.

“As the general manager, you’re in charge of everything from the front door to back door to all points in between,” said Schlenz. “I love the overall challenge of starting a club from scratch. Hiring all the department heads, staffing, setting up, concept designs – every decision has an impact on our success. Tesoro Club is a really big deal out here, and I can’t wait to surpass everyone’s expectations with our finished community.”

A Golf Club That Exceeds Member Expectations

Above all, one of the most important aspects of any club Schlenz operates is a dedication to surpassing Members’ expectations. Carefully curated by Schlenz and the ownership team, Tesoro Club’s amenity roster does just that, with plans to promote entertainment and relaxation at every turn. Schlenz is working with the team on the renovations of the Landmark Clubhouse to provide salon and spa services, a fitness center, a golf pro shop, and activities for Members to enjoy.

Tesoro Club’s Swim & Racquet Club will be the first to open with its junior Olympic, 30-meter zero-edge swimming pool, nine tennis courts, eleven pickleball courts, two bocce ball lawns, and casual poolside dining at The Cabanas grill. An upscale casual menu with healthy favorites will be served. A peninsula-shaped outdoor bar will serve cocktails and refreshments poolside with fire pit gathering areas for evening activities.

Schlenz and his team have also coordinated the renovations to Tesoro Club’s two 18-hole championship golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson. The Palmer course planned to open in fall 2022 and the Watson course is slated for 2024. The course renovations will improve playability for players of all skill levels, with open fairways winding through picturesque natural areas. The community’s luxury homes will never come into play for golfers.

“You can buy a house anywhere, but what you can’t buy anywhere is this lifestyle,” said Schlenz. “At Tesoro Club, future residents and Members can look forward to a robust community that is going to be outfitted with first-class dining, great facilities, golf courses, and more – all just a golf cart ride away.”

Leading a Team of Acclaimed Club Professionals

When it comes to making a coveted golf club lifestyle, however, Schlenz knows that it’s not just a laundry list of amenities that make the club unique. Schlenz is hiring a full team of club professionals to provide a plethora of intuitive Member services. Guy Rettig, a world-class culinarian with over 25 years of leading culinary teams in platinum-rated golf and yacht communities was recently announced as Tesoro Club’s new Executive Chef, curating a menu of locally sourced delights.

Schlenz also wanted to ensure Members would have access to golf and tennis instruction from some of the nation’s best teachers. He recently hired Head Golf Professional Matt Doyle, a PGA Class “A” member and award-winning pro since 1997. Doyle has served as head professional at numerous prestigious private clubs in South Florida and New England before bringing his talents to Tesoro Club. To spearhead Tesoro Club’s extensive racquet program, Schlenz employed Terri Gaskill, a certified USPTA Elite tennis professional with over 30 years of playing and teaching experience. Doyle, Gaskill, and their teams will proudly offer expert evaluation, instruction, tournaments, and events to players of all skill levels.

As anticipation continues to build for the reopening of Tesoro Club, the visionary new ownership has recently announced Chef Guy Rettig as the Club’s new Executive Chef. Rettig will not only create the menu for each venue but also oversee a team of culinary experts who will bring his dishes to life. From relaxed to refined, Tesoro Club’s two dining venues will offer something for every palate and every occasion. Here’s your chance to meet Chef Rettig and see what he has in store for each venue.

Meet Chef Rettig

For over 25 years, Chef Rettig has led culinary teams in platinum-rated golf and yacht communities, boutique-style resorts, and AAA guide-rated public restaurants. Rettig was mentored in classical French cuisine by some of the industry’s greatest, including Jean Louis Palladin at the Watergate Hotel in Washington DC and Roger Putier at La Petite Auberge in Newport, Rhode Island. Since then, he has shared his culinary passion across the nation, including The French Laundry in Napa Valley, California; Frenchman’s Reserve in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; and the Cullasaja Club in Highlands, North Carolina. Rettig prides himself on being a hands-on chef, sharing his passion with his team to create unique culinary dishes from scratch.

Rettig is looking forward to bringing his decades of expertise to Tesoro Club and bringing together a new culinary team of experts. “Throughout my career as an Executive Chef, I have been the opening chef at numerous clubs, restaurants, inns, and boutique hotels, and I believe it is a thoroughly invigorating experience,” said Chef Rettig. “Having the opportunity to be a part of this process once again in a wonderful locale, with such a great group of people and wonderful owners. Well, I just could not pass that up!”

The Poolside Grille

Plated Meal by Chef Guy Rettig at Tesoro Club
Located at the Swim & Racquet Club, residents will soon be able to sit back and relish in the Florida sunshine at Tesoro Club’s poolside grille. Surrounded by palm trees and nature preserves, this outdoor dining venue next to the resort-style pool will have a tropical ambiance. A full-service bar in the covered patio area provides tropical libations, while a casual menu offers something for every member of the family. Chef Rettig describes the menu of this poolside retreat as “Floribbean” style cuisine, with everything from juicy burgers and sandwiches to fresh seafood and salads available.

The Golf Grille

On the second floor of the Landmark Clubhouse, Members will find a full-service restaurant, bar, and lounge perfect for celebrating a great round of golf, or for planning the next one. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer stunning views of the nature preserves and two championship golf courses, while televisions and lounge seating offer plentiful spaces to cheer on sports teams. The Golf Grille leads to an expansive stone terrace, where fire pits and lounge areas overlooking the Club’s practice driving ranges provide the perfect place to converse with friends or stargaze into the Florida night sky. Combining the two areas, a full-service indoor/outdoor bar provides plentiful beverage options for every member of the family.

Chef Rettig is planning a seasonal menu for this timeless venue, with most ingredients regionally sourced from local farmers and growers. From sliced braised short rib to jumbo lump crab wrapped in a smoked salmon rosette, the menu will be filled with upscale new American cuisine items that are exceptionally seasoned and elegantly presented.

“No matter where residents choose to dine, each venue will share a single common denominator and our team’s motto: exceptional chefs cooking exceptional food for exceptional people,” said Chef Rettig. “We look forward to welcoming people into these new dining venues very soon.”

As featured in Port Saint Lucie Magazine, written by Glenn R. Swift.

Gently nestled along the banks of the scenic St. Lucie River lies 1,500 acres of untouched wetlands, luxury gardens, the luscious rolling greens of two championship golf courses, beautiful lakes and an abundance of tropical wildlife.

Welcome to Tesoro Preserve — the Crown Jewel of the Treasure Coast.

Tesoro has always been recognized as one of the area’s most prestigious waterfront communities, but it’s no secret that the development has had its ups and downs. Held back by developers who lacked the necessary financial resources, managerial expertise and strategic vision, the community never realized its full potential.

Well… times are changing.

“We’ve got a team that has the resources, skill sets and experience to make this the finest, luxury development on the Treasure Coast,” said Bobby Barfield, the onsite real estate broker in charge of Tesoro, who helped connect the new owners.

He should know. Barfield is not only one of the most experienced real estate brokers on the Treasure Coast, but, along with site engineer Toby Oberdorf, he has been directly involved with Tesoro since it first broke ground nearly two decades ago.

“This time is different,” he said. “The new owners are true movers and shakers with very deep pockets and loads of experience with luxury developments all over the country, including South Florida. They also have the patience to determine what needs to be done and the best way to do it.”

Plenty of Experience

The all-star team Barfield referred to is exactly that. The three owners are two New York investors, Tim Jones and Rod O’Connor, and a South Florida real estate and football legend, Tucker Frederickson.

Jones is the CEO of Robert Martin, LLC based in Elmsford, New York. Major projects are not exactly rare with Robert Martin. The company has a long track record of acquiring, developing and managing high-end properties of all kinds and holds more than 60 properties across the country with more than 20 million square feet of office, warehouse and residential properties.

A dominant Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee, the company recently acquired 56 buildings with more than a million square feet of office space for an eye-opening $500 million — the largest ever in the Empire State’s affluent Westchester County. So, when it comes to those deep pockets, Barfield referred to, you can’t get much deeper.

O’Connor, best friend and close associate of Jones, is another New York developer with a long pedigree of successful real estate projects across the country. O’Connor and Jones have worked together and partnered on a number of mega projects. Fortuitously, the two had escaped to Florida as COVID-19 ravaged the New York City area in the summer of last year.

“They were looking for an opportunity and immediately fell in love with the property,” Barfield said. “They could see its enormous potential.”

Last, but by no means least, is Frederickson, a man who’s been winning all his life. An Auburn All-America football legend, first-round NFL draft pick, former New York Giants star and a longtime associate of Jack Nicklaus, he has for decades been a respected real estate developer in his native South Florida. Specializing in golf course communities, Frederickson was a driving force behind the exclusive Bear’s Club in Jupiter.

Wowed By Location

All three were wowed by the property’s beauty and seemingly endless enchanted vistas.

“There’s just nowhere left to build in South Florida that’s east of the Turnpike and 95 that offers what we have,” Barfield said.

Tesoro features world-class golf with two par-72, signature championship golf courses [Tom Watson and Arnold Palmer], a racquet club with 10 Har-Tru tennis courts and an exhibition stadium court, two croquet courts and a pickle ball court, just minutes from Stuart with all its fine boutiques and restaurants.

Then there’s the clubhouse.

The three-story Mediterranean, 100,000-square-foot clubhouse, known as the Crane Club, is spectacular. Set beside a 12-acre lake, the Crane Club offers services that set it apart from its South Florida neighbors. It has a large pool and deck, a full-service spa, first-class dining and a whole lot more provided by the new owners — The Lessing Hospitality Group.

Known for decades as the nation’s foremost event planner and caterer, Lessing was founded in 1890 by Maxwell Lessing, who offered the first convenient lunch counter in New York City’s Financial District.

Lessing has not only been known for top-shelf services but for innovation. Its out-of-the-box approach to business started with being the first to offer a new type of meal [the sandwich] and a new drink [Coca Cola] to Wall Street customers.

Today, the Lessing Group has evolved into a multidivisional company with more than 120 locations throughout the Northeast and Florida, including 17 wedding and catering venues, 10 full-service restaurants, more than 80 corporate and academic dining centers, seven Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza franchises, and a historical inn.

Special Venue

In 2019, Lessing launched the Pelican Club and Charlie and Joe’s at Love Street in Jupiter. Sticking with a tropical bird theme, Lessing is taking the reins at the Crane Club in Tesoro.

“This is a unique and special venue,” said Jennifer Caitlin, director of marketing and a 20-year veteran of Lessing. “This is not your typical Florida venue. We have another charming property in Jupiter overlooking the lighthouse with the Pelican Club, but that features a distinctly Bohemian, Florida style. This has a very different feel … more like the Amalfi coast.”

Michael Lessing, Lessing’s CEO and the founder’s great-great-great-grandson, had this to say about Tesoro Preserve.

“When I first drove through the front gate, I said ‘Holy smokes’… it just took my breath away. You’re in Florida, but you’re far away.”
Lessing added this about how well the venue fits its exclusive clientele and prestigious portfolio.

“We don’t do anything small,” Lessing said jokingly “We can do any kind of event here up to 300 people on a grand scale. Whatever you can imagine, we can accommodate it at the Crane Club … destination weddings, galas, corporate expos … we can tent the backyard if you want.”
And he had this to say about the opulence of the clubhouse.

“Before the current owners, the clubhouse interior was very dark,” Lessing said.

“This is a full-scale renovation, from the painting and the lighting to the chandeliers and the hardwood floors. When everything is complete … in mid-February … we will feature the finest ballroom and bridal suite in Florida.”

When it comes to housing, there is a wide variety of homes at Tesoro.

“We offer existing single-family homes with two bedrooms on quarter-acre lots to 7,000-square-foot mansions on half-acre lots, and none of the houses back up to one another,” he said. “Every lot in the community borders a lake, a wetland or a golf course. There’s a lot of room to roam … and if you want to build your own custom dream home, there are vacant lots available.”

So, look out Vero Beach and Stuart, make room for Port St. Lucie because at Tesoro Preserve, the future is bright.
